It has been said that the origin of the Chillum was in India despite the fact that a number of them were also spotted in South America. This then goes to say that it is not really clear where theses types of pipes originated from. Traditionally, chillums were moistly used in spiritual contexts. For example, the Holy Men of India have been smoking Chillums for a very long time now.
The spiritual meaning attached to the use of Chillums is somewhat similar to the importance attached to red wine by Catholics. The chillum traditionally was exclusively made into a male practice and most of the time it was shared by a group of people. Even to this day, they are locally made in India which makes them easily available at very cheap prices. They were first brought into the USA and Europe during the new age/hippie movement that took place in the sixties.
The chillum is a very important part of smoking. It is a style of pipe all it’s own. Chillums that are usually smaller in size work to produce very hot smoke directly into your mouth. Bigger chillums on the other hand work very well to cool off the smoke which results in your enjoying a larger amount of smoke and as logic would dictate, the more the amount of smoke you inhale, the stronger the effect that you will get from the smoke.

Believe it or not, there are actually some rules and regulations that apply to the use of chillums. These rules and regulations are not obligatory thus you do not need to panic but the experienced smokers in the use of chillums do hold these stipulate rules and regulations in very high regard. Below are a number of the said rules:
The chillum can only be lit by the person who prepared it; not just anyone can walk in and light it. This respect has to be accorded to the individual who worked to prepare it.
In the event that there is any special attachment to the chillum, the owner might prefer to clean it himself and he should be allowed to do so.
Traditionally, the hash that is used in the Chillums is the black hash that is made by hand; it is very similar to the Indian Charas. One can however also use Himalayan hash or Nepalese hash.
Once you are through with smoking, it is important that the chillum be appropriately cleaned. Cleaning it is very easy; you simply pass a string or piece of cloth through the chillum and vigorously move it up and down to ensure thorough cleaning.
