While, of course, glass pipes do enjoy a very rich history, it’s popularity has grown parallel with the rise in glass blowers joining the “scene”.
#1. Upright Bubbler Pipes
These are a classic, and thusly, a number one favorite amongst smokers. You will find upright bubblers in just about any “standard” collection of glasses pieces. They often come with different ways of filtering the smoke; however, the standard form stays the same, and this is what attracts so many people. In fact, it’s one of the most used water pipes in Hollywood movies, usually showcased in the “stoner comedy” genre.
But these types of pipes are no laughing matter. The skill level that is required to produce glass, especially of this quality, is nothing short of extraordinary. Many take this art for granted, just because they have been born while this culture was creating streamlined processes to create glass so masterfully quick. Glass is truly a fragile thing that requires a steady hand. So why was it so hard before the 1900’s? Well, this is mostly due to the reason that in the early days, glass was considered to be as valuable as gems. And since it was so fragile, it’s main purpose was to serve as art or fashion, rather than have functionality (think churches and royalty’s homes). The practices of making glass dates as far back as the beginnings of 3000 B.C. During these times, molten sand and other naturally available ingredients were used to mold glass in Mesopotamia and Egypt. For quite a long time, countries that bordered the Mediterranean Sea were looked at as hubs for expert glass makers. It wasn’t until the 1850’s Industrial Revolution that glass become less expensive and was able to be mass produced for the average consumer to buy.
During these Pre-Industrial Age times though, the glass pieces that were made were very expensive and small. These pieces were actually mostly used by aristocrats and priests. Glass blowing finally replaced glass molding in Rom around 30 B.C. The Romans then started to shape glass while it was still warm by using a blowpipe to blow into it. This is a very basic technique that is still employed by those blowingglass today.
#2 Gravity Glass Water Pipes
The gravity pipe, oh a classic! Maybe you remember a setup where you and a friend would cut out the bottom of a bottle and fill a bucket or something larger with water. You would then proceed to put your herb in the top and pull up on the bottle. The natural suction and gravity of water pulling down through the cut out bottle would do the “smoking work” for you, leaving you with a smooth, filtered smoke. Well Grav Labs started with this piece when it first started blowing, they called it the Gravitron, and basically made the “DIY” pipe into a classic glass water pipe. This is many of our personal favorites, if not for the simple fact, it makes us feel young again like when we first smoked (except now it’s classy glass instead of a plastic milk jug).
