How to Use a Dab Rig
First you’ll need: a rig, a dab nail, possibly a dome (recommended), a dabber (must be resistant to high heat!), a handheld butane torch or E-nail and your concentrate of choice.
Let’s briefly discuss dab rig joints, which are usually 10, 14, or 18 millimeters. Those are the most common sizes and are used to describe a glass-on-glass dab rig. 10 millimeter joints are smaller than a dime while a 14 millimeter is just the right size for a dime to fall into. Male joints have an accessory slide on top of them; female joints have an accessory slide inside them.
The most common sizes of rigs are: mini (8 inches or smaller), standard (8-12 inches), and of course there are custom pipes out there too which come in a wide range of sizes.
Mini dab rigs are a popular favorite due to ease of portability, and the smaller size makes it great for holding and quick cleaning.
When it comes to dab nails, there are four main forms: glass, titanium, quartz or ceramic. Glass and quartz heat the quickest but also lose heat the quickest.
To Vape with a Dome or Go Dome-less?
What is a dome, you ask?
A small, removable vapor shield that surrounds your dab nail.
There are two purposes for vapor domes:
to protect your skin from touching the scorching hot nail
to help funnel the vapor down towards the mouthpiece
IMPORTANT NOTE: Avoid touching the dome until after the dab has been taken and allowed to cool off for several minutes.
What about dome-less nails?
This is a nail that doesn’t need a dome for trapping the vapor because it has a hole for the vapors to travel through. It should also be noted that there are various kinds of domeless nails, such as: convertible nails, Flux nails, and concave dish-shaped nails that have small holes around the sides.
When deciding between the dome or domeless nails – we would recommend a dome for new dabbers and those who like to conserve vapor.
Dab Rig: The Heating Process
Now that you have all of the necessary equipment for dabbing. Where do you begin?
Start by placing the dab nail on the rig and heating the nail up with your hand torch. This should take anywhere from 5-20 seconds depending on your type and size of nail.
WARNING*Be very careful not to get glass or quartz too hot – they are the most prone to breakage.
For best results, the temperature should be hot enough to vaporize the concentrate but not so hot the concentrate flames or burns upon contact. – Preference can only be learned through experience, although most experts recommend between 600-800 degrees F.
A few things to consider during this process depends on the kind of dab nail you are using as all the different nail materials heat up slightly differently and will have different pros and cons so be sure to view our posts on the pros and cons of glass and quartz nails as well as the pros and cons of ceramic nails to see how each works most efficiently.
Using a Dome
Your nail is now heated and ready for dabbing, what next?
Place the vapor dome over the nail.
Using a domeless nail? Then you can skip this step.
Once your dome is covering the nail, place the dab onto the nail with your dabber tool.
You will notice that the dome acts as a funnel, channeling the vapor downward towards your mouthpiece.
Now is the difficult part…just kidding.
Simply inhale those delicious concentrates.
Exhale the stress!
You have now taken your first dab!
Congratulations! Welcome to the wonderful dabbing community!
Although we discussed the process of dabbing, there are many different tricks of the trade, so to speak, which could not be covered in one short post.
There are many different rigs. Many different nails. Many different dabbers. Many different domes. And most importantly… many different people who like dabbing.
Every piece works in a special way.
Manufacturers take the time to figure out what types of materials work best under heat and pressure when handling wax and a hand torch. The best materials used to make nails are ceramic, glass, and titanium. Each of them have pros and cons; the most commonly used type of dab nail is titanium because they get hot faster and maintain heat longer. Not to mention they aren’t prone to cracking or breakage.
Each person has a personal preference and various companies have been very accommodating to their needs!

Recycler Dab Rigs
These types of dab rigs re-use the precious vapor you inhale and channel it through two separate chambers.
This delivers vapor smoothly and with maximum concentrate flavor by filtering the vapor multiple times.
The other added benefit of recycler rigs is that they’re great for daily use as they cut back on reclaim build up.
And that’s just one type of dab rig!
We hope that this post provided the information you needed. Hopefully, you have a clearer idea of the parts of a dab rig and how they work.
