Is There a Difference Between Concentrate Pipes & Dab Pipes?
One of the most common questions about dabbing is whether there is a difference between concentrate pipes & dab pipes. I’ll be answering this question throughout this post.
Drum Roll Please…
No, there is NOT a difference.
The terms concentrate pipe and dab pipe have been used interchangeably for many years. Depending on preference and where you are from, you may use either one to describe the same device.
Some other interchangeable terms are: “dab rig”, “concentrate rig”, and “vapor rig”.
Most experts will agree that all of these terms describe the exact same device.
Dabs, Concentrates, and Oils
Why are they called concentrates?
Because this product is the concentrated form of large quantities of high quality herbal blends & extracts. You are going to hear a wide variation of names to describe the same product.
Examples of names include: dabs, wax, concentrate, shatter, and oil. However, it is important to note that not all concentrates are in oil form.
There are four main textures & consistencies of concentrates:
Hash – (pic shown right – top)Condensed outer coating of flowers. Comes in a dark, dense form.
Oil/Wax – (shown right – 2nd one down) The consistency resembles very thick honey – Very similar to shatter when its in a warm state. BHO (butane hash oil) would be considered in the category.
Crumble/Budder – (shown right – 3rd one down) A creamy concentrate, similar to that of crumbly peanut butter. Varies in color from a yellow to darker brown or green. Is sometimes rock-like but can be sticky depending on the temperature.
Shatter – (shown right – bottom) A solid form of glass-like concentrate. Color variation from blondish gold to a darker brown. Similar to thick honey when in warm temperatures.
What makes them different is the chemicals used in the extraction process including carbon dioxide, butane, ice/water and isopropyl alcohol.
Remember that all concentrates have slightly different potencies, so be sure to ask an experienced friend or professional before consuming.

There is a wide range of prices and you want to look for quality glass that fits your budget. For more portability & lower prices; I’d recommend a mini oil rig.
Here are a few good dab rig models for beginner dabbers
For quality & style; I’d recommend a standard size concentrate rig.
Owning a custom concentrate rig is a respected luxury in the world of vaping.
QUICK TIP: If you decide to purchase a dab rig, remember to be careful when selecting your dab nail, double check that its the same mm size as your rig.
When purchasing a titanium or steel nail, be sure to “season the nail”. To season a nail: Simply heat the dab nail and then take a little bit of wax, or better yet, resin (since it will be wasted) and swish it around the inside of the nail! Doing this will cover the micro scratches on the nail surface with oil and offer much better flavor for future hits.
We will discuss the variety of dab nails more in depth in another post.
Let’s review a few things, shall we?
